When to use this calculator

Use this page when a future amount sounds meaningful on its own but still needs to be compared in present-day terms.

How to read the result

The main result is the discounted present value. The supporting figure shows the difference between the future amount and the discounted value.

Worked example

If a future amount is 10,000 in 8 years and the discount rate is 6%, the calculator shows the smaller present amount that would be equivalent under those assumptions.

Assumptions and limits

This page applies the rate and time period you enter only. It does not decide the correct discount rate for an investment, project, or lending context.

Common questions

Why is present value smaller than future value?

Because the calculation discounts the future amount back through time at the rate you entered. The more time or discount rate involved, the lower the present value becomes.
